Brookhaven Academy ACT Initiative

Brookhaven Academy is committed to preparing students for success beyond the classroom. Our ACT Success Initiative is a comprehensive approach beginning in 7th grade and continuing through 12th grade, giving students the opportunity to build ACT skills, confidence, and familiarity well before test day. Rather than relying on last-minute preparation, BA is creating a long-term approach that combines classroom instruction, ACT-focused strategies, testing, technology, trained teachers, and student and family involvement. Brookhaven Academy has established a school-wide goal of achieving an average ACT score of 25 among students in grades 10–12. By beginning ACT preparation in 7th grade and providing consistent instruction, practice, resources, and testing opportunities throughout a student's time at BA, we are creating a long-term approach designed to help every student grow, reach his or her individual potential, and be better prepared for college and scholarship opportunities.

MasteryPrep for Every Student

Brookhaven Academy has invested in MasteryPrep for our students and teachers in grades 7–12.

Every student receives an individual MasteryPrep account, fully funded by Brookhaven Academy at no additional cost to families, providing access to ACT preparation resources both at school and at home.

Students can use MasteryPrep to practice ACT-style questions, strengthen areas where improvement is needed, develop test-taking strategies, and continue preparing independently throughout the year.

By making these resources available beginning in 7th grade, students have years, not weeks, to prepare.

ACT in the Classroom 

ACT preparation is being intentionally incorporated into regular classroom instruction throughout grades 7–12.

• Students will encounter ACT-style bell-ringer questions
• ACT-style questions within classroom instruction and assessments
• Test-taking strategies and techniques
• Practice with pacing and time management
• Increased focus on ACT-tested skills and concepts

These skills go beyond preparing for a test. Critical thinking, reading comprehension, mathematics, grammar, analysis, and problem-solving help prepare students for college, careers, and life beyond BA.

ACT Preparation Begins in 7th Grade

Students shouldn't have to wait until junior year to begin thinking about the ACT. Beginning in 7th grade allows BA students to develop foundational skills, become familiar with ACT-style questions, learn testing strategies, and build confidence over several years. Our approach is designed to make ACT readiness an ongoing part of a student's academic experience—not something that begins a few weeks before test day.

The Student's Role 

BA can provide the tools. Students must put them to work. Students are encouraged to set individual ACT goals, take classroom practice seriously, regularly use their MasteryPrep account, review their testing results, and spend additional time strengthening areas where improvement is needed.

The Parent's Role 

Parents can support their students by discussing ACT goals, encouraging regular use of MasteryPrep, reviewing PreACT and ACT results together, and encouraging students to take advantage of the resources available to them.

Why Act Success Matters?

A strong ACT score can open doors to college admission, scholarships, honors programs, competitive academic opportunities, and other post secondary pathways. Every student’s path after Brookhaven Academy will be different, and our goal is to ensure students leave BA prepared to pursue the opportunities available to them.
